The West End revival of Sophocles' Elektra officially opens at the Duke of York's Theatre February 5 after beginning previews January 24. Daniel Fish (Oklahoma!) is at the helm, with Brie Larson, Stockard Channing, and Patrick Vaill (Oklahoma!, Stranger Things), leading the cast as Elektra, Clytemnestra, and Orestes, respectively. Performances continue through April 12.
The company also includes Marième Diouf (Romeo and Juliet) as Chrysothemis and Greg Hicks (The Grapes of Wrath) as Aegisthus, with a chorus comprising Hannah Bristow, Wallis Currie-Wood, Jo Goldsmith-Eteson, Nardia Ruth, Rebecca Thorn, and Adeola Yemitan. Understudy Arthur Boan rounds out the company. Casting is by Heather Basten.
Elektra follows its titular character in the days following her father's assassination and the return of her long-lost brother, Orestes, both looking to avenge the murder. This revival, the West End's first in more than a decade, is the U.K. premiere of a translation by Anne Carson, originally penned in 2001.
“What is ancient and what is contemporary?," posed Fish in an earlier statement. "Carson’s translation explodes this question. It is a thrilling challenge to work on Sophocles’ tragedy, by way of Carson’s words, and on the beautiful stage of The Duke of York’s with Brie Larson."
The production also features choreography by Annie-B Parson, scenic design by Jeremy Herbert, costume design by Doey Lüthi, lighting design by Adam Silverman, sound design by Max and Ben Ringham, and music by Ted Hearne. Kate Godfrey serves as voice and dialect coach. Empire Street Productions is producing.
