Nonprofit organization Black Broadway Men, Inc. has announced two new programs for 2023 to support and uplift Black men in theatre. The organization will begin its 2023 Black Broadway Men Mentorship Program in January, with its BBM Playwriting Initiative to follow.

The inaugural Mentorship Program will select four male-identifying Black creatives between the ages of 18 and 24 and focus on helping them build careers and professional networks. The program is currently seeking four mentors over the age of 30 with Broadway, national tour, or union regional credits. Dates are set for January 15-February 10, and mentors will receive a stipend for the five-week commitment. Applications are open until December 12 to become a mentor.

Also launching will be a Playwriting Initiative, which will support emerging Black, male-identifying playwrights between the ages of 18 and 35 in shining a light on the experiences of historically marginalized Americans.

Black Broadway Men, Inc. was founded in 2020 by Broadway alum Anthony Wayne, James T. Lane (Kiss Me, Kate), Terence Archie (Company), Ahmad Simmons (West Side Story), Sir Brock Warren (Summer: The Donna Summer Musical) and Isaiah Josiah. The racial equality group is open to all self-identifying Black men who work on stage or behind the scenes in theatre and aims to provide a safe space for Black male theatre professionals.
