A biopic of choreographer Alvin Ailey is in development through Fox Searchlight, Deadline reports. The studio intends to collaborate with his dance company’s Artistic Director Robert Battle and Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison to explore the life and career—including specific iconic dance pieces—on screen.

The deal with Fox Searchlight includes the rights to the Jennifer Dunning biography Alvin Ailey: A Life in Dance.

Grammy winner Alicia Keys is on board as a producer alongside Judy Kinberg and Susan Lewis through her AK Worldwide, as well as Rachel Cohen and Jana Edelbaum of iDeal Partners.

Ailey’s style blended genre—including modern, ballet, jazz, and techniques of various African cultures—to explore the plight of the marginalized both onstage and off. Through the creation of a multi-racial company, his Dance Theater became an inclusive space for dancers and choreographers of color and those who were part of the LGBTQ community. His myriad accolades include the NAACP’s Spingarn Award, a Kennedy Center Honor, and a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.
