DESCRIPTION

Casting SONS OF THE PROPHET, a play by Stephen Karam.

Synopsis: If to live is to suffer, then Joseph Douaihy is more alive than most. With unexplained chronic pain and the fate of his reeling family on his shoulders, Joseph's health, sanity, and insurance premium are on the line. In an age when modern medicine has a cure for just about everything, SONS OF THE PROPHET is the funniest play about human suffering you're likely to see.

"Sons of the Prophet" had its New York premiere at Roundabout Theatre Company in 2011, and is written by Tony Award-winning playwright Stephen Karam ("The Humans").

This production will be part of Normal Ave's 2018-19 main stage season, directed by Shannon Molly Flynn.

BREAKDOWN OF ROLES:

Joseph: Male-Identifying, 25-32. A second generation, “white-passing” Lebanese-American, former potential Olympic runner sidelined by a series of ailments and family obligations. Just this side of a nervous breakdown. Intelligent, quick-witted, self-aware. He has a deep love for his family and a desperate longing to break away from them and start his own life. The heart of the play.

Charles: Male-Identifying, 18-26, to play 18. A second generation, “white-passing” Lebanese-American, and Joseph's brother. Somewhat of a outsider. Has serious soulfulness and a great sense of humor. Flamboyant boy in a small town. Loyal. Sharp wit.

Bill: Male-Identifying, 55-75. A first generation Lebanese-American, he is irascible, with a loud and bigoted presence and a voice that demands to be heard. He struggles to accept that he is aging. Fiercely protective of his family history and culture. Deeply religious Maronite Catholic.

Gloria: Female-Identifying, 45-60, any ethnicity. A former bigwig in the publishing industry recovering from her husband's suicide and a scandal with one of her authors. A sympathetic, damaged woman. Joseph’s nosey boss. Neurotic, loopy, out of touch with reality- her internal motor runs at a very high speed (she belongs in NYC, not rural PA). She has a knack for saying the wrong things.

Vin/Ensemble: Male-Identifying, 18-26, to play 18, African-American. Young, sweet, naive high school kid that got caught up in executing a prank with devastating consequences. An excellent football player, he is popular, good looking and optimistic. Good intentions abound, there is no malice, and he spends the majority of the play deeply atoning for his actions. Will also play various small ensemble roles.
