40s, Irish accent. Ian is an ex-priest working as a therapist in Dublin. Although Ian is a therapist, he is having just as much of an existential crisis as his patients are. After leaving the priesthood he started a relationship with Nessa. They have a daughter. Ian has decided to leave Nessa. Ian is a man who keeps his emotions and thoughts close to his chest. Over the course of the play, Ian s internal struggles begin to reveal themselves.
50s, Irish accent. John is a middle-aged widower who is extremely upset by his wife s passing. He works as a catering company rep. Ian is his therapist. Not only is John dealing with the natural grief of losing his wife: he is also struggling with an immense guilt for his behavior in the past. When the ghost of his wife, Mari, appears in his house, John is horrified and leaves his house immediately.
30s, Irish accent. Neasa is Ian s girlfriend and mother of his child. She is working class. She loves Ian, but is struggling to keep their lives together. She realizes that Ian came with baggage, since he left the priesthood for her. Neasa, however, wasn t prepared enough to understand exactly how hard it would be to make their relationship work. When we meet Neasa, Ian has left her and the baby alone for a week living with his family (who don t speak to her) while he deals with some issues. Neasa is utterly bewildered and upset by Ian s distance.
20s-early 30s, Irish accent. Laurence is a male prostitute that Ian hires. He is currently nursing a hand injury due to a firework accident involving his son. Laurence has a six year-old son, and appears to have relationship issues with his son s mother. Laurence, however, does not like to talk about his family when he is with clients. He picks up these type of jobs from time to time when money is needed; it s indicated that this job might be needed to pay for health bills for his hand injury.
