Penn State University is seeking applicants for the MFA in Theatre with an specialization in Music Directing for the Musical Theatre. Two students will be admitted in the fall of 2019. It is the first program of its kind in the country, headed by Dan Riddle. A three year course of study, the first two years will be on campus at University Park, PA. In the third year, the candidate will music direct a large on-campus production one semester and intern or assist in a regional, New York, or international production the other. Accepted students will be eligible for a graduate assistantship that will cover all tuition plus a stipend. Courses include a repertoire class, arranging and orchestrating, notation software, sound design, a Sitzprobe class, and conducting.
All applicants should be pianists by trade. Playing auditions is a big part of this training, so sightreading skills and familiarity with the repertoire are crucial. After review of the initial submission materials, certain applicants will be asked to audition/interview via Skype. Selected applicants will travel to Penn State.
Please record a two to three minute live audio or video of a contemporary, challenging piano part with a groove, as well as a cover letter, resumé, and three references (names and contact info only) to email@example.com for consideration. Deadline for submission is January 18th, 2019.
