The Oregon Shakespeare Festival is seeking a Lighting Department Manager. The Lighting Department Manager supervises the unionized Lighting and Video Department, ensuring that the season is successfully implemented and maintained, including all changeovers and performances. Provides vision and leadership for the department and facilitates internal and external communications. 

This is a full-time, year-round, exempt position.

Salary Rate: $1,396/week 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions**):

  1. Manages Lighting personnel, including but not limited to:
    1. Assigns and communicates work assignments to staff.
    2. Manages the day to day schedule of the lighting staff and work flow.
    3. Ensures crew’s adherence safety procedures, and creates systems when necessary.
    4. Recruits, hires, performs performance reviews, manages progressive discipline, and orchestrates and organizes the on-boarding and off-boarding processes of lighting staff, FAIR participants, and volunteers.
    5. Performs administrative tasks such as payroll, expense reports, status reports, and injury forms.
  2. Collaborates and communicates with the lighting and video designers of each season, balancing the show requirements with the resources of OSF and the repertory lighting plots. Collaborates with the Resident Lighting Designer and Video Supervisor as necessary in this process.
  3. Attends Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, (ED&I) sexual harassment, and any other anti-bias training and workshops as scheduled by the institution.
  4. Models and supports the mission and values of OSF by:
    1. Demonstrating inclusive behavior.
    2. Maintaining a safe working environment free from any aggressions.
    3. Recognizing micro-aggressions and interrupting behaviors that hinder OSF’s diversity and inclusion efforts.
  5. Develops and advocates for Lighting’s annual labor, material, and capital budgets in the season budgeting process. Manages budgets throughout the year, keeping leadership apprised of any challenges.
  6. Collaborates and communicates with many internal stakeholders, including
    1. Technical Director and ATD’s in regards to lighting equipment and cabling which integrates with scenery and in regards to the rigging and space needs of the individual productions and the rep.
    2. Stage Operations department in regards to how to shift the shows (who does what), scheduling, tech tables, cable paths, etc.
    3. Costume department in regards to costumes with embedded electrical, lighting, or special effects.
    4. Stage Management in regards to run crew assignments needs, crew performance, cue lights, run lights, and special needs for any given performance.
    5. Props Department in regards to electrified and illuminated props.
    6. Wardrobe and Wig Departments in regards to quick change areas, power needs, lighting needs, and lighting elements embedded into hair pieces.
    7. Sound department in regards to shared cabling, show control, etc.
    8. Physical Plant in regards to the maintenance of the house lights, work lights, building circuitry, lighting control, and equipment rooms.
  7. Organizes the work of the department within the framework of the I.A.T.S.E. CBA and manages issues arising under the CBA in concert with the Director of Production.
  8. Monitors technical rehearsals; solves problems as they develop in concert with Lighting & Video Department staff.
  9. Supervises lighting staff on work calls, focus calls, technical rehearsals, changeovers, load-ins and load-outs in concert with the Master Electricians and Video Supervisor.
  10. Ensures that the lighting and video equipment inventories and infrastructure of the theaters are properly maintained. Ensures that the backstage work spaces, catwalks, and shop are kept clean and organized.
  11. Ensures design integrity and quality control of the lighting and video designs throughout the season.
  12. Participates in future planning and season planning of the Festival.
  13. Manages special effects such as atmospherics and pyrotechnics.
  14. Attends and participates in regular Production Department Meetings and show specific production meetings.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Responds to after-hours emergencies, and participates in emergency response team such as Smoke Team.
  2. In concert with the Resident Lighting Designer, manages lighting design paperwork, lighting plots, and lighting department server folders.
  3. Represents OSF at organizational functions and conferences when requested.
  4. Interfaces with donors.
  5. Participates and actively engages in Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations.
  6. Advises and/or leads facility maintenance and improvement projects as appropriate.
  7. Physically lead and/or participate in lighting and video installation and changeovers.
  8. Teach and train FAIR participants and volunteers in concert with Resident Lighting Designer and Master Electricians.
  9. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Production.


Work Experience: Ten years of experience in professional theatrical lighting, including five years of supervisor experience in the entertainment industry and at least two years of hands-on experience.

Qualifications/skills: Expert knowledge of theatrical lighting equipment and industry standards and practices, including the operation of conventional and moving lights, computer lighting consoles, reading light plots, hanging, focusing, maintaining, and repairing lighting equipment. Experience integrating electronics, lighting elements, and special effect into scenery, props and costumes. Experience with ETC EOS Family Lighting Consoles, industry standard theatrical lighting fixtures including Source 4 (incandescent and LED sourced), Vari*Lite Moving Fixtures, High End Moving Fixtures, Clay Paky Moving Fixtures, and ETC dimmers and architectural control systems. Mastery of VectorWorks Spotlight and Lightwright. Deep understanding of lighting and video hard wired and wireless networking, topologies, and protocols such as ETC NET3, sACN, MSC, ArtNet, and DMX. Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and general comfort with computer systems. Working knowledge of the fundamentals of electricity.

Physical Ability: Frequently climb and work from ladders and personnel lifts. Regularly squat and maintain position. Regularly crawl and kneel. Regularly reach above shoulders. Climb 24 foot vertical wall ladder to get to the catwalks above the stage. The ability to wear fall rest harnesses. May be required to lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 35 pounds.

Other Skills, Ability and/or Knowledge: The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of external professionals and in-house staff. Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to keep multiple projects moving forward simultaneously. The ability to self-manage a workload in order to meet deadlines. Initiative and tenacity in problem solving. Leadership, motivational, organizational skills. Effective teamwork. Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a collaborative and productive manner with designers, technicians, stage managers, co-workers, and management.

Special Hours Requirements: Night-time and weekend hours are regularly required. Standard work week is Tuesday – Sunday. Significant overtime is required, especially during technical rehearsals. The ability to work overtime frequently and at a short-time notice is required.

PREFERRED: Experience working with unions and within the context of collective bargaining agreements. Experience working in a repertory environment. ETCP Electrics certification. Vari*Lite Certified Maintenance Technician, Familiarity with Christie, DLP and LCD Video Projectors, Watchout Software and video networking system design. Comfort when speaking in front of large groups.
