Carpentry Apprenticeship

Studio Theatre is seeking applicants for our 2018-2019 Carpentry Apprenticeship!

As a respected midsized theatre, Studio is both ambitious enough to provide invigorating programming and small enough to allow its apprentices unique access to Studio's artistic and administrative leadership. The work is rigorous and rewarding; apprentices have a full schedule, and work together with the staff to meet the demanding deadlines of the field. Night and weekend hours are sometimes required. This program is a full-time, 50-week commitment. Apprentices are provided with housing within walking distance of Studio Theatre, as well as a biweekly stipend.

The Carpentry Apprenticeship affords professional set construction experience by working on a full season of productions alongside seasoned professionals as a full time member of the scene shop. The apprentice reports to the technical director and works alongside, and trains with, the staff carpenters and contracted employees. Opportunities include learning carpentry, metalwork, rigging and automation, crew supervision, budgeting and timelines, atmospheric effects, pneumatics and hydraulics, and CAD for scenic applications.

This is an exciting time at Studio Theatre— we are about to embark on our 40th anniversary season. For the last four decades we’ve produced relevant, moving, and daring work on 14th Street. We’re celebrating our legacy with a season that is especially now: Stories about 14th Street real estate and the mechanics of American politics, the latest audacious comedy from the writer of Bad Jews, and a boundary-breaking summer performance series. It’s a season with the characteristic thoughtfulness and style of Studio work—and a little more sense of event for this year of celebration.

Applicants must have carpentry experience, be organized and detail-oriented, and must be able to successfully complete projects independently. Driver's License, ability to lift 50 lbs. repeatedly and throughout the day, and ability to build from designer and shop drawings required.

This is a 50-week long program, beginning the first week of July 2018 and concluding in June 2019. You must be available to commit to full length of the program.
