Main Stage - LOA ref. to COST
(Female, ageless and over 60) The family matriarch. Music hall performer. Tough, forthright- but that too is an act. An in-your-face-truth teller who is more focused on keeping her audience entertained than telling the real truth. Hiding her medical prognosis and her fear that her career is probably over. She misses her deceased husband more than she lets on. Does not like sentimental drama. Very protective of the family legacy, which is threatening to fall apart.
(Male, 30s-40s) Fanny’s son and Julie’s younger brother. A stage actor turned movie star, one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood - known for his offstage antics as well as his many films with an astonishing range of quality. He leaps in and acts on impulse - perhaps running ahead of the question of what would happen if he ever slowed down.
(Female, 40s) Fanny’s devoted daughter and a beloved, elegant, Broadway star. From a young age she’s lived her life in public and on stage. Competent and sane so the rest of her family doesn’t have to be. She has no idea who she would be if she weren’t an actress and the panic that question brings up blinds her to the fact that she’s chosen her life again and again, and loves it. She is divorced with a grown daughter, Gwen.
Mezzo with strong belt
(Female, early 20s) Julie’s daughter. The next generation of the acting dynasty. Flapper spirit. Acting is in her legacy but she’s not sure if its in her soul. She craves lightness and warmth and is both smarter and a better actress than she herself knows. Has a sparkling energy that she herself doesn’t fully recognize due to being overshadowed by her family of performers.
Soprano who can belt
Gilbert “Gil” Marshall
(Male, 40s-50s) Julie’s former lover. Quiet, dominant, successful. Self made with a tendency to brood. After years of acquiring power and money, he is confronting his own emptiness, re-examining his life, and reconnecting with the love of his youth - Julie.
(Male, 20s) Gwen’s fiance. A good looking affable Wall Street trader. Has a talent for enjoying life without seeking complication. His old-money family lives in Westchester but they could be from Fitzgerald’s East Egg. Thinks Gwen’s eccentric family is nuts but still adores her.
Herbert “Bertie” Dean
(Male, Late 50s but doesn’t believe it) Fanny’s brother. A fine actor and “the flower child of the Lamb’s Club.” Clothes a shade too well tailored; necktie, shirt and handkerchief always match. He is frustrated and baffled by the disappearance of roles for someone of his stature and is sure he can still play a leading man. Many years ago he married, for love, an actress not quite up to his talents and he suspects his wife, who he does still love, is dragging him down.
(Female, late 40s but doesn’t believe it) Bert’s wife. Believes she is just as good an actor as any member of the Cavendish family and it is just not fair that she is never cast in a suitable role. She is a Jane Austen character channeled through Kaufman and Ferber: impressible, and oblivious. ROLE CAST.
(Male, 70s but flexible) The Cavendish family’s theatrical agent and producer. Comes from an Eastern European Jewish family and found a home as a native of Broadway. He turned the admiration for the glamour of the stars into a career supporting them. There may be things missing in his life, but sadness is a comfortable enough companion. Few of his shows succeed but he’s made money with the Cavendishes through the years and is quite protective of them. ROLE CAST.
(Female, 20s-30s) The Cavendish family’s loyal maid. Strong belt
CHORUS of servants and stage-hands. Seeking dancers who sing and act, particularly with tap experience.

(Male, 20s) a romantic young member of the Jets, Tony is fed up with his gang life and yearns for something more. When he falls deeply in love with Maria, Tony finds himself violently torn between his friendships and his love, and between staying loyal to his gang and staying true to himself, ultimately meeting an untimely death. Excellent singer who moves well.
Tenor - Bb to Bb
(Female, 18-early 20s) - A hopeless romantic and innocent young girl; she falls deeply in love with Tony and finds herself at the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs. Like Tony, she is torn between staying loyal to her family and to her love. Bernardo's sister. Puerto Rican. Excellent singer who moves well.
Soprano - Bb up to high 'C"
Detective Schrank / Glad Hand
(Male, 40-60) Schrank: A local police detective frustrated by the ongoing violence between the Jet and Sharks. Blunt, brash, and unapologetic / Glad Hand: The social director at the gym fance. He is cheerful and “square”
(Male, 60-75) The owner of the candy store where the Jets hang out. He tries to guide the Jets youthful angst and provides a safe haven for Tony. Old fashioned and wise in his ways.
(Male 45-65) The local beat cop. He has no patience for the gangs conflict and tries to keep tensions from errupting between them. Regularly mocked by the local gangs.
For all of the following roles, all must be superb dancers and singers:
(Female, 25-35) Feisty and assertive. She dispenses sisterly advice to Maria and tries to shield her from the dangers of the gangs. Bernardo's girlfriend and Maria's friend. Puerto Rican.
(Full) up to D (Belt or strong mezzo-mix)
(Male, 20-30) The proud, strong, handsome leader of the Sharks. Bernardo seeks to carve out territory as a sense of identity for him and his friends and has a chip on his shoulder as an outsider. Maria's brother and Anita's boyfriend. Puerto Rican.
Baritone - Bb up to Eb
(Male, 20-30) Leader of the Jets. Feisty, intelligent, and quick tempered. Fiercely protective of his turf and his community, he seeks to eliminate the Sharks and establish his own gang's dominance. Tony's best friend, he is eventually murdered by Bernardo.
Bari/Tenor - Bb up to a strong "G"
(Male, 20-25) An angry and, at times, naive Shark who turns murderous and vengeful. Suitor to Maria and friend of Bernardo's. Puerto Rican.
(Female, 15-25) A spunky tomboy who is desperate to become a member of the Jets. The other Jets mock her for her ambitions, but generally appreciate her company. Full of energy and heart.
Jets- Diesel, Action, A-Rab, Baby John, Big Deal/Snowboy. Mix of Baritones and Bari-Tenors
Sharks - Indio, Luis, Nibbles, Pepe, and Moose. All Puerto Rican. Mix of Baritones and Bari/Tenors
Jets Girls - Velma, Graziella, Minnie, Clarice.
Shark Girls -Rosalia, Consuelo, Teresita, Francesca. All Puerto Rican. Chest and Head Voice are required for AMERICA and I FEEL PRETTY
