Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is an internationally recognized presenter of contemporary performing arts and cinema. We are seeking three full-time, seasonal Fellows to learn the technical and theatrical skills necessary to become a backstage technician. Stagecraft is a lucrative and exciting career and this program is a unique opportunity to learn and work with talented production crews and experienced instructors in the field.  At BAM we are proud to present some of the most diverse programing imaginable from countries, cultures and languages from every corner of the globe. You will be a part of an experienced, collaborative, dedicated production team which is passionate about doing great work.

This position takes place from approximately February 1st to the end of June 2018. Must be available for a full time schedule during that time.

  • Fellowship Components and Opportunities:

    Learn the backstage theatrical skills and techniques in areas such as lighting, rigging, carpentry, safety onstage, sound, video, costumes and more
  • Learn and work with stage crews getting firsthand experience with how the elements of stagecraft combine to create a show
  • Take classes with experienced instructors in all elements of stagecraft, meeting pre-established benchmarks, culminating in taking a test of theatrical knowledge, the ESET test.
  • Receive instruction from BAM’s seasoned production staff in production management, personal career counseling and mentoring
  • Tour theaters and shops throughout the New York area learning different types of stagecraft employment opportunities
  • Provide an opportunity to network and make connections within the New York theater industry
  • Learn from all departments at BAM providing insight into the work and employment possibilities surrounding the theater
  • See BAM performances and films. Gain access to see some of the most coveted shows in town

Fellowship Role and Responsibilities:
  • The Fellows will follow a schedule created in advance by the Production Manager. This schedule will consist of instruction, being a member of calls onstage, visiting local venues and shops, and more
  • The Fellows will be expected to arrive promptly for all work calls and classes
  • In assisting and taking part in crew calls, the fellows are expected to:
    • Receive and follow instruction from Department Heads and Production Staff
    • Observe and follow appropriate safety protocol
  • You will be expected to study relevant subject materials in technical stagecraft, and meet regular benchmarks and tests

  • Interest in pursuing a career in theatrical production
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The right candidate for this job will be ready to work, eager to learn and have a positive attitude
  • Able to take part in moderate amount of physical activity for calls up to 14 hours in length. This activity includes a large amount of standing and walking, and will require lifting and carrying moderate weights, pushing of heavy cases, and carrying weights of 50 lbs. for short distances
  • The above schedule will feature evening and weekend hours so a flexible schedule is a must
