DESCRIPTION

ArtsPower National Touring Theatre, in its thirty fourth year as a touring theatre company, is casting three musicals for its 2019 fall touring season.  “Judy Moody & Stink” a new musical based on the book by Megan McDonald, directed by Jennie Hughes (rehearsals begin September 16; tours until December 8, 2019); “The Little Engine that Could” a musical based on the book by Watty Piper, directed by Casey Pratt (rehearsals begin September 23; tours until December 8, 2019); “The Monster Who Ate My Peas” a musical based on the book by Danny Schnitzlein, directed by Sarah Kozlow; (rehearsals begin October 2; tours until December 15, 2019 .)

All ethnicities are encouraged to attend. 

Pays $400 a week for actor/ASM; plus $55 a day provided when touring. (Note: All actors will be signed on as an assistant stage manager. As an ASM, all actors will have some light set-up and strike duties.

 For Open Calls, prepare a 16 bar cut, standard musical theatre preferred. No pop/rock. Bring sheet music in correct key. Accompanist will be provided. Bring 3 headshots & resumes.   For more information, visit www.artspower.org

"Judy Moody & Stink"

Judy Moody: female, 20s but can look younger (pre-teen), likable; has a great capacity to be kind and thoughtful; can be moody; smart; high emotional IQ; wears her emotions on her sleeve; can be tough on herself; has a habit of being too boisterous in class; feuds with her brother Stink but loves him; strong-willed; wants to get famous; close to her Dad; and can be a bit bossy and likes to tell Stink what to do. Mix/legit.

Stink Moody: male, 20s but can look younger (pre-teen); Judy’s younger brother; fun-loving; dynamic; excitable; active; independent; rough and tumble boy; although he looks up to Judy, he can be a source of irritation to her; has an unusually good sense of smell; and often speaks before he thinks. Tenor.

Sophie of the Elves /  Laura: female, 20s but can look younger (pre-teen); [Note: one actor doubles as both parts]. For SOPHIE OF THE ELVES: Young; comedic; one of Stink’s best friends; a bit eccentric; fun-loving; lovable; goofy and geeky; loves sci-fi, fantasy; and willing to follow the leader. For LAURA: Recovering from a heart transplant; innocent; lonely at the hospital; wants to make friends; physically weak but emotionally strong and kind-hearted; is open and honest with her emotions; Mix/legit.

Steve / Dad / Mr. Todd: male, 20s – 30s; [Note: one actor plays all three roles]; . For STEVE: A professional smeller for NASA; very intelligent and down to earth; enthusiastic; likes to be “punny;” likes children; an educator at heart; a good listener; take charge; For DAD: Warm; loving; understands Judy’s moods and is extra patient with her; studious; and enthusiastic about his children’s achievements. For MR. TODD: Judy’s teacher who loves being a teacher; book smart; can be a disciplinarian when he needs to be; all the kids’ favorite teacher; and looking out for his students’ best interests; Baritone.


“The Little Engine That Could”            

Little Blue: female, 20s but can look younger (teens), she is the little engine that could, an optimist (I think I can), young but determined, loving, mix/legit.

Little Red: female, 20s but can look younger (teens), Little Blue’s best friend, spirited, a bit of an opportunist but still likeable, mix/legit. 

Rusty: female, 20s – 30s, acts as the narrator, engaging, warm, loving, mature, encourages Little Blue to follow her dreams, legit.

Silver: male, 20s – 30s, the head of the railroad, in charge, authoritative, doubtful that Little Blue can succeed, lyric baritone. Note: In “The Little Engine That Could” the three female actors also double working hand puppets that represent the toys: a teddy bear, a doll, and a clown. Puppeteer skills are not required but willing to learn.


"The Monster Who Ate My Peas"

Danny: female, 20s but can look younger (pre-teen), a little boy (played by a girl), a good kid, intelligent, stubborn about trying new things like eating peas, makes a deal with a monster to eat his peas, learns the importance of  honesty and friendship.


Dad / The Monster: male, 20s/30s, [note: one actor doubles as both parts] For the part of Dad: Danny’s father, loves his son very much, patient, wants his son to grow and try new things. For the part of the Monster: a seemingly nice & funny guy which really masks the nasty troublemaker who is out to con Danny. Lyric baritone. 

Mom: female, 20s/30s, Danny’s mother, acts as the narrator, warm, loving, smart, loves her son. Mix/legit.

Ralph the Dog: female, 20s but can look younger, Danny’s best friend, loyal, friendly, smart. Mix/legit.
