The world-premiere stage musical adaptation of Muriel’s Wedding, based on the 1994 Australian film comedy that starred Toni Collette, officially opens November 18 at the Sydney Theatre Company. Performances began November 6 in the Roslyn Packer Theatre.

Presented by the Sydney Theatre Company and Global Creatures, Muriel’s Wedding The Musical is an updated theatrical adaptation by original screenwriter P.J. Hogan. The musical’s score incorporates ABBA pop hits alongside original songs by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall.

Directed by Simon Phillips, the production will run through January 27, 2018.

Maggie McKenna, a 20-year-old Melbourne born-and-raised actor who trained at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, returns to Australia to make her professional stage debut in the title role.

Muriel’s Wedding The Musical tells the story of a young, ABBA-obsessed woman who dreams of a fairytale wedding, despite missing the groom. With her best friend, she moves to Sydney, where her dreams come true. That’s when things start to go wrong.

Madeleine Jones joins McKenna as Muriel's best friend Rhonda, alongside Justine Clarke as the long-suffering Betty, with other members of the Heslop clan played by Briallen Clarke (Joanie), Michael Whalley (Perry), and Connor Sweeney (Malcolm). U.K. favorite Helen Dallimore plays beauty consultant Deidre Chambers.

The cast also includes Annie Aitken, Prue Bell, Ben Bennett, Kaeng Chan, Hilary Cole, Tony Cogin, Dave Eastgate, Manon Gunderson-Briggs, Jaime Hadwen, Sheridan Harbridge, Mark Hill, Caroline Kaspar, Adrian Li Donni, Luigi Lucente, Stephen Madsen, Kenneth Moraleda, Laura Murphy, David Ouch, Tom Sharah, Gary Sweet, Aaron Tsindos, and Christie Whelan Browne.

Muriel’s Wedding has choreography by Andrew Hallsworth, set and costume design by Gabriela Tylesova, lighting design by Trent Suidgeest, sound design by Michael Waters, and video design by David Bergman.

Guy Simpson is music supervisor. Orchestrations, arrangements and additional music are by music director Isaac Hayward.
