The Playwrights Realm, the Off-Broadway theatre company behind the recent acclaimed world premieres of Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves and Michael Yates Crowley’s The Rape of the Sabine Women, By Grace B. Matthias, will continue its slate of new works with the world premiere of Don Nguyen’s Hello, From the Children of Planet Earth beginning February 24. The new play, about the oddities of human conception and the wonder of space travel, will star Kaaron Briscoe, Dana Berger, Jeffrey Omura, Jon Hoche, and Olivia Oguma.

Hello, From the Children of Planet Earth will be directed by Jade King Carroll at The Duke on 42nd Street. The limited engagement is scheduled through March 24 with a March 7 opening night.

Split between the perspectives of lesbian couple Betsy (Briscoe) and Shoshana (Berger), who are trying to conceive, and their potential-sperm-donor/aerospace engineer friend William (Omura), Hello, From the Children of Planet Earth explores what happens when we face the vastness of our future and when dreams give way to realism.

Nguyen himself was asked by two friends to be a sperm donor, an experience that inspired the new work. “I had to take stock of my entire life and ask myself questions I didn’t think I was ready to ask. What I found is artificial insemination is not an easy thing—there are complications involved that you really have to discuss,” says the playwright.

Nguyen was part of The Playwrights Realm’s Writing Fellowship in the 2012–13 Season.

The creative team for Hello, From the Children of Planet Earth is made up of Kimie Nishikawa (set designer), Nicole Pearce (lighting designer), Elisheba Ittoop (sound designer), and Ari Fulton (costume designer). Kara Kaufman is production stage manager, and Lily Perlmutter is assistant stage manager.
