Idina Menzel “learned to live without” in If/Then, but now she's singing another song about learning (and living, loving, crying, losing, bleeding, and screaming).

Playbill has learned that the Wicked Tony Award winner and Frozen star is taking center stage in an Actors' Equity 29-hour reading of the musical adaptation of Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill.

The show, featuring songs from Morissette’s Grammy-winning 1995 album and a book by Oscar winner Diablo Cody, is set to premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts in May 2018. Diane Paulus will direct.

The A.R.T. was able to confirm Menzel's involvement.

Menzel is not, however, expected to appear in the A.R.T. world premiere of the musical; she is already scheduled to star in Roundabout Theater Company’s Off-Broadway production of Joshua Harmon’s Skintight at that time.

A similar casting scenario happened with a previous high-profile musical from the regional theatre: Finding Neverland, in which Matthew Morrison led a workshop, while Jeremy Jordan took over in Cambridge while Morrison (who returned for the show’s Broadway bow) filmed Glee.

Menzel's involvement also marks a reunion between her and Tom Kitt, who penned the music for If/Then. The Tony- and Pulitzer-winning composer has contributed new arrangements and orchestrations for Jagged Little Pill.

The reading also features fellow former Elphaba Carrie Manolakos, Adam Kaplan, Lauren Patten, Nora Schell, Vishal Vaidya, and Libby Winters.

Jagged Little Pill, which was originally announced in 2013, will follow a modern, multi-generational family and will explore gender identity and race relations.
