Who Won the 2017 Broadway Brackets Championship?

News   Who Won the 2017 Broadway Brackets Championship?

Two Lin-Manuel Miranda musicals went head to head in the final match-up of the 2017 Broadway Brackets Championship.

The Tony-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda musicals In the Heights and Hamilton went head to head March 17-19 in the final round of the Broadway Brackets Championship.

That young, scrappy and hungry musical Hamilton beat out In the Heights to become the 2017 Broadway Brackets Champion, with team #AHam earning 2.86K (69%) votes over team #Usnavi, which came in with 1.26K (31%) votes.

A bit of background on how Broadway Brackets 2017 was set up: Playbill looked at the last 16 Tony Award-winning Best Musicals and placed them into two “divisions”: 2001–2008 and 2009–2016. We then tallied the total number of nominations each Best Musical Tony winner earned and ranked them accordingly.

For example, Hamilton (2016) and The Producers (2001) have 16 and 15 nominations, respectively, making them the top-ranking shows in their divisions. They were then paired accordingly with a musical in their division that had the least amount of nominations. Each bracket was then broken down into subsequent match-ups based on number of nominations.

Broadway fans were invited to vote for their favorite show in each match-up, with the winning musicals moving on to compete in the next round.

Take a look above as Broadway favorite Lesli Margherita and Playbill vlogger Tyler Mount discuss the final results.

Hamilton’s ultimate victory was the narrowest win in all of its Broadway Brackets match-ups—the show previously went up against Memphis, Fun Home, and The Book of Mormon.

Thanks to all the Broadway fans who played, and congrats to Hamilton on becoming the Broadway Brackets 2017 Champion!
