What Did Critics Think of Indecent on Broadway? | Playbill

The Verdict What Did Critics Think of Indecent on Broadway? Paula Vogel’s play with music officially opens at the Cort Theatre following an acclaimed Off-Broadway run last year.

The Broadway transfer of Indecent, the newest work by Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel, officially opened April 18 at The Cort Theatre. The play with music is inspired by the real-life controversy surrounding the 1923 Broadway production of Sholem Asch's God of Vengeance, the love story of two women.

Indecent began previews on Broadway April 4 following an acclaimed Off-Broadway run at downtown’s Vineyard Theatre last year. The show features music composed by Lisa Gutkin and Aaron Halva, and a cast made up of Katrina Lenk, Mimi Lieber, Max Gordon Moore, Tom Nelis, Steven Rattazzi, Richard Topol, Adina Verson, Ben Cherry, Andrea Goss, and Eleanor Reissa.

In 1923, the reaction to Asch’s work was divided between those who considered it to be groundbreaking and by others as traitorous. Indecent charts the history of the drama and the artists who risked their lives to tell the story; the play is written by Vogel, created by Vogel and Rebecca Taichman, and directed by Taichman.
