Video Watch Tony Winner Judi Dench in Exclusive Clip From Trevor Nunn’s New Film Red Joan The Tony-winning director behind Les Misérables and Cats brings the true story of the “Granny Spy” to the silver screen.

On April 19, Trevor Nunn’s latest feature film Red Joan will hit cinemas and be available On Demand.

The movie, which has played the Toronto International Film Festival, the Zurich Film festival, and the Sebastian Film Festival, stars Dame Judi Dench as the so-called Granny Spy.

Based on a true story, Joan Stanley (Dench) is an elderly widow whose life comes into question when the British Secret Service arrests her for providing classified scientific information—like details on the atomic bomb—to the Soviet government. The movie also stars Sophie Cookson.

With 34 Broadway credits, Nunn has directed such works as The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Cats, and Les Misérables—each of which earned him a Tony Award for direction. He holds additional Tony nominations for Starlight Express, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard, Closer, Not About Nightingales, the 2002 revival of Noises Off, the 2002 revival of Oklahoma!, and Vincent in Brixton.

In the film world, Nunn last directed King Lear, starring Sir Ian McKellen, for television.
