Watch Tony and Oscar Winner Justin Paul Compose Greatest Showman’s Music On Set in Real Time | Playbill

Video Watch Tony and Oscar Winner Justin Paul Compose Greatest Showman’s Music On Set in Real Time This exclusive clip is one of the bonus features on The Greatest Showman—available on Digital and Movies Anywhere March 20.

Justin Paul is a Golden Globe-, Oscar-, and Tony-winning composer, and in the exclusive video clip above, director Michael Gracey explains one of the reasons why. On the set of his original movie musical, The Greatest Showman, Paul improvises the musical accompaniment at the beginning of the song “From Now On.”

“What was beautiful was watching Justin play and see Hugh’s performance and the moments where he looks off to one of the Oddities, and [then] seeing in the next take when he would adjust musically for those moments—and he was doing that in real time,” says Gracey. “It is testimony to the brilliance and the genius that is Justin Paul.”

Paul and his songwriting partner Benj Pasek won their second Golden Globe for Best Original Song for their empowerment anthem “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman. The duo also wrote the lyrics to La La Land, which earned them a Golden Globe and an Oscar. They won the 2017 Tony Award for Best Score of Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen.

The Greatest Showman is available on Digital and Movies Anywhere beginning March 20 and on Blu-ray, 4K UHD, DVD and VOD April 10. Also, watch it again and again with the Sing-Along Edition and Music Machine “Jukebox” features, available on iTunes. The release includes behind-the-scenes videos—like the one above—with commentary from the films creators and stars, including Jackman, Zac Efron, and more.
