As an August installment of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s #HamilDrop series, Grammy nominee Andra Day takes on Eliza Schuyler Hamilton’s simmering 11 o’clock anthem “Burn” in a new music video. Take a look above.
The new music video mirrors Eliza’s narrative, following a woman who learns her partner was seen with someone else and resolves to set their past ablaze.
Day covered the Hamilton tune for The Hamilton Mixtape, a de facto retroactive concept album featuring covers, alternate takes, and remixes of Miranda’s Tony-winning score. In December 2016, she took the stage at the Richard Rodgers Theatre to perform the song to celebrate the release of the album.
The #Hamildrop series offers new Hamilton-inspired content every month through December. This is not the first release exploring “Burn”; in April, five current and former Elizas across the United States and in the U.K. recorded an earlier draft of the Act II ballad.
Earlier this week, Miranda dropped an additional music video: Mobb Deep’s “Boom Goes the Cannon,” released through the #Hamildrop series in June. A third video will be released Friday.
