Watch Pieces From Public Theater’s 4th #BARS Workshop, Created by Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal | Playbill

Video Watch Pieces From Public Theater’s 4th #BARS Workshop, Created by Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal As these two clips—both inspired by statues and monuments—show, theatre and verse come together in the workshop series.

The fourth annual #BARS Workshop, created by Rafael Casal and Hamilton Tony winner Daveed Diggs, took place at Off-Broadway’s Public Theater earlier this summer, culminating in a three-night run of verse-driven performances inspired by sculptures and national monuments. Following the performances, the artists headed to the recording studio to preserve their pieces.

Take a listen to “Fearless Girl,” inspired by the Fearless Girl statue in Manhattan’s financial district and performed by Brittany Dorazio, Carmen Borla, Kaili Y. Turner, Parris Lewis, Megan A. Ewy, and Shamikah Martinez, above. The piece features music by Rodney Bush.

Below, check out “Brother Rogers,” inspired by Pennsylvania’s statue of Fred Rogers and performed by Damany Mathis. Both videos are filmed by Samuel Falconi.

The #BARS Workshop was created as a platform “for the rapper who wants to step into theatre, or actor who wants to incorporate rap into their wheelhouse.” The first session took place in June 2016.
