Video WATCH: George Salazar Sings an Off-Brand Song From Be More Chill Joe Iconis and Salazar go inside the album Two-Player Game on the special recording of the tune.

“We were excited about doing Be More Chill songs that fell into two categories,” says composer Joe Iconis of putting together his new album, Two-Player Game. “One: these songs that you know that you’re hearing in a new context, and two: songs that George would never sing. ‘I Love Play Rehearsal’ was one of those songs.”

On the stripped down album, featuring Salazar and Iconis only accompanied by piano, Salazar sings the song Iconis wrote for the character Christine Canigula for the show, which currently plays an extended Off-Broadway run at New York’s Signature Theatre Center.

“There’s a thrilling thing as the singer to sing something that you normally wouldn’t have the opportunity to sing,” says Salazar.

But Iconis adds that this new recording of the song now has a place in the composer’s canon: “You so made it your own that now it feels like, ‘Of course, George sings ‘I Love Play Rehearsal.‘”

Released July 27 by Ghostlight Records, Two-Player Game is currently available via physical, streaming, and digital formats.

Produced by Ian Kagey and Kurt Deutsch, the album includes songs such as “Broadway, Here I Come!” from Smash, “Michael in the Bathroom” and the titular “Two-Player Game” from Be More Chill, “Tiny Short Little Song,” and “The Answer.” The program was originally presented in concert at Feinstein’s/54 Below.
