Want to Present an Original Song at New York City Center? | Playbill

Industry News Want to Present an Original Song at New York City Center? Encores! Off-Center’s Lobby Project offers songwriters the chance to create and perform an original track inspired by Assassins.
Stephen Sondheim

In celebration of the upcoming staging of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s 1990 musical Assassins, New York City Center is asking composers and songwriters to create an original song inspired by “The Gun Song” from the show. The initiative is in the same spirit as last year’s Menken Mixtape and the previous year’s Sondheim Mixtape.

All genres of music are encouraged, and pieces must not be more than five minutes long.

The selected tracks will be presented before select evening performances of Assassins at New York City Center, which will be revived July 12–15 as part of the Encores! Off-Center series.

Winners will also receive $300 and participate in a nightly panel to discuss their work. Sondheim himself may be in attendance.

The deadline to submit original songs is June 23. Click here for the submission form.

New York City Center’s revival of Assassins will be directed by Anne Kauffman. The dark musical comedy imagines the meeting of nine presidential assassins and would-be assassins from different historical periods.

The Encores! Off-Center series will also feature revivals of The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin and Really Rosie. For tickets and more information, visit NYCityCenter.org.
