Tony-nominated Waitress composer Sara Bareilles has joined forces with Waitress book writer Jessie Nelson and producer J.J. Abrams (who made his Broadway debut with The Play That Goes Wrong) for a new series entitled Little Voice. Apple has picked up the half-hour dramedy for a straight-to-series order, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Nelson will write and direct the first of the 10 episodes.
The series, which is the title of Bareilles’ first album, is a love letter to the “diverse musicality” of New York and will explore finding one's voice and the courage to utilize it. Bareilles will pen music for the series; whether she will also appear in the program has not been announced.
Nelson, who will also serve as showrunner, will executive produce with Bareilles, Abrams and Bad Robot.
Another musical series, the animated Central Park, is also in development through Apple; the series will feature co-writer Josh Gad, Hamilton Tony winners Leslie Odom Jr. and Daveed Diggs, Tituss Burgess, and Kristen Bell.
Bareilles, recently seen in the NBC live broadcast of Jesus Christ Superstar, is also set to co-host the 2018 Tony Awards alongside Tony nominee Josh Groban.
