TV Roundup: Daveed Diggs Set for Snowpiercer TV Series, Daniel Radcliffe Will Play an Angel, and More

Daveed Diggs Boards Snowpiercer
Daveed Diggs, who won a Tony Award last year for his performance as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton, will headline TNT’s drama pilot Snowpiercer. Based on the 2013 movie of the same name, the series would be set on a massive train occupied by the sole survivors on Earth after the planet becomes an apocalyptic, frozen wasteland. Diggs will star as Layton Well, a prisoner confined to the ruthless conditions in the back of the train who takes part in the revolt against the elites who inhabit the front.

In additional Diggs news, ABC has released an official trailer for its new comedy series The Mayor, airing Tuesday nights at 9:30 PM beginning this fall. Diggs executive produces with the show's writer Jeremy Bronson, as well as Jamie Tarses and pilot director James Griffiths.

The series, which features Broadway and Glee star Lea Michele, concerns young rapper Courtney (Brandon Micheal Hall), who decides to run for mayor as a publicity stunt. His plan goes awry ending in an election victory, and Courtney must overcome his hubris in order to help the struggling city he loves. The cast also includes Bernard David Jones, Marcel Spears, and Yvette Nicole Brown.

Iain Armitage and Alan Cumming Get CBS Series
CBS has announced a premiere date for Little Sheldon, the spin-off to The Big Bang Theory. The comedy, starring pint-sized theatre critic Iain Armitage as a young version of Jim Parson’s Sheldon Cooper, will launch September 25 immediately following the original series' season premiere. It will move to its 8:30 PM slot on Thursdays beginning November 2.

Meanwhile, Alan Cumming’s previously reported CBS pilot Killer Instinct has been picked up for a full season, now under the title Instinct. The Tony-winning stage and screen favorite will play a former CIA operative who’s lured back into agency work to stop a serial killer.

Daniel Radcliffe Tapped for TBS Comedy
Stage and screen alum Daniel Radcliffe will star opposite Owen Wilson in Miracle Workers, a straight-to-series order from TBS. Lorne Michaels (30 Rock, Saturday Night Live) will executive produce the project. Based on Simon Rich’s book What in God’s Name, the anthology comedy series is set in Heaven, where a low-level angel (Radcliffe) does busy work for his boss, God (Wilson). The seven-episode series will launch in 2018. Radcliffe last appeared on the New York stage in the Public Theater’s Privacy.

The Return of Roseanne (and Laurie Metcalf)
The comedy series Roseanne, which ran on ABC from 1988 to 1997, will return to that same network in 2018. The eight-episode reboot will feature the original cast, including 2017 Tony nominee Laurie Metcalf (A Doll's House Part 2) as Jackie, Roseanne Barr as Roseanne, John Goodman as Dan, Sara Gilbert as Darlene, Michael Fishman as D.J., and Lecy Goranson as Becky. Sarah Chalke, who played Becky in later seasons, will appear in another role. Barr will executive produce, along with Gilbert, Tom Werner, Bruce Helford, Whitney Cummings, and Tony Hernandez.

The return of Roseanne follows the announcement that NBC's Will and Grace—starring Sean Hayes, Megan Mullally, Debra Messing, and Eric McCormack—will also return for a limited 10-episode run. Take a look at photos from the forthcoming season below.
