Tony-Winning Fun Home Available for Licensing in 2018 | Playbill

Broadway News Tony-Winning Fun Home Available for Licensing in 2018 The 2015 Tony winner for Best Musical will be available to license through Samuel French.

Samuel French Inc., one of the world’s leading publishing and licensing company of plays and musicals, has announced that Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori’s Fun Home will be available to license after the national tour's conclusion in 2018.

The musical extended numerous times during its Off-Broadway premiere at the Public Theater and transferred to Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre in 2015, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Musical.

Based on the life of graphic artist Alison Bechdel, Fun Home is the coming-of-age story that parallels the lead character's sexual awakening with the suicide of her closeted gay father. The musical resonated widely with audiences and went on to play a national tour. The work was a finalist for the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and and made history when its female writing team won Tonys.

The show’s script and vocal selections were made available in 2015 while the show was still running, when Samuel French first closed the licensing deal and acquired the live rights.

With this most recent announcement, Fun Home is available to license for performance, and one can expect it will be a popular title in theatres across the country.

“Even musicals about women, where women are the central characters and not just a romantic lead and really have a story of their own [are rare]," Bechdel told Playbill during the show’s original Off-Broadway run. “The moment with Small Alison singing about the butch delivery woman feels huge. To have a child sing about desire and identification; it’s brilliant.’”
