Sir Nicholas Hytner, who presided over the National Theatre of Great Britain as its artistic director from 2003 to 2015, has written a memoir. The book, titled Balancing Acts: Behind the Scenes at London's National Theatre, was released in in the U.K. in April 2017 by Jonathan Cape, and gets its U.S. release under the Knopf imprint.

Hytner’s Broadway credits include the original 1991 production of Miss Saigon, the 1994 Lincoln Center Theatre revival of Carousel, The History Boys, and One Man, Two Guvnors.

His Broadway work was only the tip of the iceberg, however. His credits include theatre productions around Great Britain, and opera productions in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Geneva, and Munich.

At the National Theatre alone he staged The Cripple of Inishmaan, Wind in the Willows, The Madness of George III, (as well as its film adaptation) and other titles.

Hytner’s tenure there resulted in several London hits that transferred to Broadway, notably War Horse, which won the 2011 Tony Award as Best Play, and two shows, History Boys (2006 Tony for Best Play) and One Man, Two Guvnors, that featured a young actor named James Corden, who went on to host the 2016 Tony Awards ceremony an to host his own CBS late night show, The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Hytner was nominated for Tony Awards six times, both as a director and as a producer; and won Best Director Tonys twice, for Carousel and The History Boys.
