Tony Awards Tony Winner Ben Platt Discusses Dear Evan Hansen on the Red Carpet: ‘It Forces Us to Start Conversations’ The Tony winner opened up about his performance on the red carpet before his big win.

The cast of Dear Evan Hansen walked away from the 71st Tony Awards June 11 with six trophies, including Best Leading Actor and Best Musical. Prior to their big wins, star Ben Platt took to the red carpet with his family to discuss the new musical. Watch the video above.

“It can’t help but reach you because you’re faced with it front on, and it forces us to start conversations we’re afraid to start in a way that other mediums I don't think can,” Platt said on the red carpet about the moving Best Musical winner that explores mental health and the struggles of fitting in.

The Tony winner performed the production's breakout anthem “Waving Through a Window” at the awards and received a standing ovation for his emotional performance.
