Boston’s Huntington Theatre Company will present two Best Play nominees of Broadway’s 2016–2017 season as part of its upcoming lineup: Lucas Hnath’s A Doll’s House, Part 2, as well as the previously reported Indecent by Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel.

A Doll’s House, Part 2, a comedic sequel to Ibsen’s classic drama, will play the Huntington Avenue Theatre January 4–February 3, 2019. Les Waters, who helmed Hnath’s The Christians Off-Broadway, will direct. Indecent will play the same venue April 26–May 25. Rebecca Taichman, who won a Tony for her direction, will reprise her work in Boston. The play is a co-presentation between the Huntington and Los Angeles’ Center Theatre Group; the production heads to the latter June 4–July 7 next year.

The season kicks off September 5 in the Calderwood Pavilion with Huntington Playwriting Fellow Eleanor Burgess’ The Niceties. The play, which explores the dynamic between a black student and a white professor, will run through October 7. Kimberly Senior will direct.

The lineup also includes Charles Marowitz’s Sherlock’s Last Case, directed by Maria Aitken (September 28–October 28), Michael Christopher’s Man in the Ring in a staging helmed by Tony nominee Michael Greif (November 16–December 16), a Romeo and Juliet from Artistic Director Peter DuBois (March 1–31), and Melinda Lopez’s translation of the Federico Garcia Lorca play Yerma, directed by Melia Bensussen (May 31–June 30). Lopez’s solo show Mala recently concluded a run with the Tony-winning regional company.

Absent from the season is a musical by Stephen Sondheim; in 2015, the company announced it intended to produce all 15 shows featuring music and lyrics by the composer over the course of several seasons. The long-term project launched that fall with A Little Night Music, with Sunday in the Park with George and Merrily We Roll Along following in subsequent seasons.

As previously reported, the Huntington’s main proscenium venue is expected to go under renovations in late 2019 after the space was purchased by QMG Huntington LLC from Boston University. The theatre reached an agreement with the development company that would allow the theatre to remain in the longtime home under their own ownership. QMG’s plans include a high-rise apartment complex and an expanded lobby for the theatre, featuring a café and an event space.
