To Kill a Mockingbird Documentary From Scott Rudin Eyes Fall Release on HBO | Playbill

Film & TV News To Kill a Mockingbird Documentary From Scott Rudin Eyes Fall Release on HBO Rudin is the producer of the current Broadway stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel, penned by Aaron Sorkin and starring Jeff Daniels.

After bringing To Kill a Mockingbird to the Broadway stage, Scott Rudin will further explore Harper Lee’s story on the small screen. The producer is behind an HBO documentary feature, currently titled All Rise: Echoes of “To Kill a Mockingbird”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The two-hour feature, expected to premiere this fall, will touch upon Lee’s novel and its continued resonance, the 2015 publication of her follow-up Go Set a Watchman, the 1962 film, and the current play, adapted by Aaron Sorkin.

"It's got a lot of extraordinarily smart people talking about and engaging with what the book means," Rudin said. "Why it mattered, why it still matters and still speaks to people in as profound a way as it does."

The production, directed by Bartlett Sher, opened December 13 at the Shubert Theatre with a cast including Jeff Daniels as Atticus Finch and Celia Keenan-Bolger as Scout. A national tour will launch at Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center in August.

The new adaptation has been the focus of multiple legal battles throughout its journey to Broadway, including a dispute between the Lee estate and Rudin over the liberties taken with Sorkin’s script, as well as the cancellation of various stagings of Christopher Sergel’s earlier stage adaptation due to exclusivity rights, resulting in Rudin offering the Sorkin-penned version to certain amateur companies around the country.
