As dastardly duo Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett say, “times is hard,” and “desperate measures are called for.” At a recent press event for the Off-Broadway revival of the Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler musical, Playbill asked the stars to bake a Broadway legend into a pie—and offered them a bite.
Watch below as Tony nominees Norm Lewis and Carolee Carmello—as well as their co-stars—contemplate which Broadway icon would be best served in a delectable meat pie. Watch out, Patti LuPone and Angela Lansbury: these performers are hungry, and your talent is just what they need to sate their appetites.
NORM LEWIS, CAROLEE CARMELLO, AND THE NEW CAST OF SWEENEY TODD MEET THE PRESS
In addition to Lewis and Carmello, the current cast of Sweeney Todd features Matt Doyle as Anthony, Alex Finke as Johanna, Jamie Jackson as Judge Turpin, John-Michael Lyles as Tobias, Brad Oscar as Beadle Bamford, and Stacie Bono as the Beggar Woman and Adolfo Pirelli. Bill Yosses, a former White House pastry chef, cooks up pies and mash for audience members for each performance.
The Tooting Arts Club production is directed by Bill Buckhurst and transforms the Barrow Street Theatre into a working pie shop, which sets the scene or the tale about a barber who—with the help of the maker of the worst pies in London—vows to exact revenge on the Judge who removed him from his wife and daughter.
Performance are currently scheduled to run through December 31, 2017.
