The Public Theater’s Mobile Unit production of The Winter’s Tale opens November 30 at the Off-Broadway theatre. The show currently plays a free, sit-down run at The Public following a three-week tour of New York City’s correctional facilities, homeless shelters, community centers, and social service organizations.
Lee Sunday Evans directs a cast made up of Justin Cunningham (Leontes), Christopher Ryan Grant (Antigonus, Old Shepherd), Nina Grollman (Young Shepherd), Nicholas Hoge (Polixenes), Patrena Murray (Paulina), Chris Myers (Florizel), Sathya Sridharan (Camillo), Ayana Workman (Perdita), and Stacey Yen (Hermione).
In The Winter’s Tale, a king becomes convinced that his wife is pregnant with another’s child. She perishes, the accused flees, and the infant, cursed, is left to die. But from tragedy, emerges romance, forgiveness, and new life.
The Mobile Unit production of The Winter’s Tale kicked off November 1 at the Pelham Fritz Recreation Center in Manhattan. Other stops on the tour included The Bronx Williamsbridge Oval Recreation Center, the Queens Roy Wilkins Recreation Center, and Brooklyn Brownsville Recreation Center among others.
Performances began at The Public Theater November 26 and will continue through December 17.
