Thousands gathered on the Great Lawn in Central Park to hear the New York Philharmonic perform music by Saint-Saëns, Leonard Bernstein, and Rimsky-Korsakov. The program, led by James Gaffigan, was intended to celebrate the centennial of Laureate Conductor Leonard Bernstein; it featured his Three Dance Episodes from On The Town. There was also specially-composed music thanks to the New York Philharmonic Very Young Composers program, which included 11-year-old Jordan Millar's Boogie Down Uptown, and 10-year-old Camryn Cowan's Harlem Shake. Both young composers received plaudits on stage. The evening concluded with the traditional firework display.
