Regional News The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center Taps Works by Tom Kitt, Judy Kuhn, and More for Summer Slate Three musicals and eight plays will be developed at the Tony Award-winning theatre center dedicated to nurturing new work.

The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, the Tony Award-winning theatrical hub located in Waterford, Connecticut, has announced the lineup of artists selected to test and develop new work as part of its National Puppetry, Music Theater, Playwrights, and Cabaret & Performance Conferences.

Notable artists heading to the O’Neill this summer include Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal), Tony winner John Logan (Red), Tony winner Jeff Marx (Avenue Q), Tony nominee Judy Kuhn (Fun Home), and Tony nominee Michele Lee (Seesaw).

“Last fall the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center received the National Medal of Arts in a White House ceremony. This summer, the O’Neill boldly continues our mission as launchpad of the American theatre with our 2017 professional season,” Executive Director Preston Whiteway said in a statement. “The artists selected across our programs, from nearly 2,000 applicants, are adding exciting and necessary voices that will play our nation’s stages for years to come. I’m grateful to my six partners – the artistic directors leading these vital programs – and encourage all those looking for the best and brightest new talents in American theatre to join us this summer.”

The National Music Theater Conference, under the artistic direction of Paulette Haupt, will offer public performances June 24–July 14. Selected NMTC works follow:

The National Playwrights Conference, under the artistic direction of Wendy C. Goldberg, will offer readings July 5–29. Devlin Elliott will be the writer-in-residence. Selected NPC works follow:

The Cabaret & Performance Conference, lead by Emmy Award-winning artistic director John McDaniel, will offer public performances August 2–12. Headliners include Judy Kuhn, Christina Bianco and Brad Simmons, Tracy Stark, Spencer Day, Barb Jungr and McDaniel, and Michele Lee.

Each summer the O’Neill also hosts the National Puppetry Conference (artistic director Pam Arciero) and the National Critics Institute (director Chris Jones).
