Cher—as well as Stephanie J. Block, Teal Wicks, and Micaela Diamond of Broadway’s The Cher Show—appeared on CBS This Morning February 13 in an interview with Gayle King to talk about why it takes three women to play the one and only Cher.
“Her life does have so many different chapters that it does take the three of us,” said Block.
It’s no secret that Cher, who worked closely with the show’s creators and cast, requested many changes—even up to and after opening night. “I think what made her such a great actor,” said Wicks, “is she's tapped into human authenticity and we all had to believe that we are authentic actors and eventually she would be on board with us.”
Cher also had one-on-ones with the actors. “Immediately, she wanted to work on my walk,” said Block. “This is the thing with Cher: She’s not a ‘but’—she‘s an ‘and.’ Shes feminine and strong. She's yes and no. She's all encompassing. With me, she kept saying you need to be a bit softer. I never really thought or viewed her in that way, but that's the way she views herself.”
For Wicks, who plays “Lady,” Cher told her, ‘“People think I'm so tough, but I'm not that tough,’ and she said it in a way that's like she's still shocked that people think she's this tough chick.”
For the youngest, Diamond who plays “Babe,” “she reminded me that she was always always painfully shy.”
