Downtown’s SubCulture welcomes GatherNYC, a new weekly concert series through June 10 that combines a classical music concert and spoken word artistry with an intimate breakfast. (Yes, artisanal coffee and pastries are served.)
Created by American cellist Laura Metcalf and her Australian guitarist husband, Rupert Boyd, the series utilizes the hour-long program to expose new audiences to classic music while creating a larger sense of community.
Metcalf and Boyd, known as Boyd Meets Girl, have proved their musicianship, as well; the duo’s self-titled debut album, released in 2017, reached No. 3 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Chart.
Each Sunday event hosted by Metcalf and Boyd features different artists and each week, a storyteller, poet or author will give a brief performance, followed by a two-minute celebration of silence for contemplation. According to the duo, “GatherNYC evokes the community and spiritual nourishment of a religious service, but the religion here is music, and all are welcome.”
The March 25 event featured Trio Sisu: James Shields, clarinet; Laura Metcalf, cello; and Conor Hanick, piano with storyteller Peter Aguero. The series continues in April with the following:
April 1: Orion Weiss, piano
April 8: Hermitage Piano Trio: Misha Keylin, violin; Sergei Antonov, cello; Ilya Kazantsev, piano
April 15: Brandon Ridenour, virtuoso trumpeter, arranger, and composer with pianist Peter Dugan. Ridenour will perform his own creative arrangements of pieces never before heard on trumpet by Gershwin, Bernstein, Brubeck, Debussy, and more. Listen to him here.
April 22: Amy Owens, coloratura soprano, with pianist Michael Barrett. The duo will present a program of Bernstein songs in his centennial year, including “I Hate Music”, works from Candide and a few rare, unpublished Bernstein finds.
April 29: Boyd and Metcalf, also known as Boyd Meets Girl. The two will debut their new version of their favorite Beyoncé song, as well as perform selections from their self-titled 2017 album, which includes music from Bach to Michael Jackson.
