The new season will include the Boston premiere of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's Road Show, about the fortune-seeking Mizner brothers, which will be directed by Veloudos. Another Sondheim musical, the award-winning Gypsy—chronicling the evolution of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee and her relationship with her overbearing stage mother, Rose—will also be presented at the Massachusetts venue. Rachel Bertone will direct and choreograph the classic American musical, which has lyrics by Sondheim, music by Jule Styne, and a book by Arthur Laurents.
It will be a busy season for Boston Sondheim fans, as the Huntington Theatre Company recently announced it would present a Maria Friedman-directed production of Sondheim and George Furth's Merrily We Roll Along beginning September 8 as part of their ongoing Sondheim cycle.
Souvenir, Stephen Temperley's “Fantasia on the Life of Florence Foster Jenkins,” will return to Lyric Stage with its original 2007 Boston cast. Veloudos will again direct Leigh Barrett and Will McGarrahan in this comedic drama about the off key-diva, who was recently the subject of the Meryl Streep film Florence Foster Jenkins.
Sarah Ruhl's Orlando, adapted from the novel by Virginia Woolf, will also play Lyric Stage. Directed by A. Nora Long, this epic adventure, which transcends time, space, and gender, is produced in cooperation with the Modern Theatre and Suffolk University. The Tony-winning musical The Wiz, featuring a book by William F. Brown and music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, will be presented in a production directed by Dawn M. Simmons.
Performance dates for these shows and the remaining two productions will be announced at a later time.
