Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations celebrated its first performance on Broadway February 28 at the Imperial Theatre.

Featuring a book by Dominique Morisseau (marking the playwright’s Broadway debut), the musical uses the group’s hits to tell the story of their journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Audiences can expect to hear such tunes as “My Girl,” “Just My imagination,” “Get Ready,” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.”

The Des McAnuff-helmed production made its world premiere at California’s Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2017 before going on to play Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, and Toronto. The Broadway production is set to open March 21.

Leading the cast as The Temptations on Broadway are Derrick Baskin (Memphis) as Otis Williams, James Harkness (Beautiful) as Paul Williams, Jawan M. Jackson (Motown) as Melvin Franklin, Jeremy Pope (Choir Boy) as Eddie Kendricks, and Ephraim Sykes (Hamilton) as David Ruffin. Joining them are Saint Aubyn, Shawn Bowers, E. Clayton Cornelious, Taylor Symone Jackson, Jahi Kearse, Jarvis B. Manning Jr., Joshua Morgan, Rashidra Scott, Nasia Thomas, Christian Thompson, Candice Marie Woods, Esther Antoine, Marcus Paul James, Jelani Remy, and Curtis Wiley.

The Broadway production will offer a digital ticket lottery (available to enter beginning at 12 AM the day of the performance) and an in-person student rush (two per customer with valid student ID when the box office opens).

Ain’t Too Proud features choreography by Sergio Trujillo, sets by Robert Bill, costumes by Paul Tazewell, lighting by Howell Binkley, sound design by Steve Canyon, and projections by Peter Nigrini. Casting is by Tara Rubin Casting and Merri Sugarman, CSA.
