Roundabout Theatre Company will stage world-premiere plays by Roundabout Underground alumnus Jiréh Breon Holder (2017’s Too Heavy for Your Pocket) and The Americans Golden Globe nominee Hilary Bettis, alongside a new musical from singer-songwriter Daniel Zaitchik as part of its 2019-2020 Off-Broadway season.

Bettis’ timely drama 72 Miles to Go will premiere in winter 2020 at the Laura Pels Theatre. Spanning the course of 10 years, the play takes its title from the distance that separates a mother at a shelter and her American-born husband and children.

After his 2017 Roundabout debut with Too Heavy for Your Pocket—about one man’s life-altering journey with the Freedom Riders in 1961—Holder returns with …what the end will be, which will have its world premiere in spring 2020 in the Laura Pels. The play follows three generations of men who live under one roof and grapple with their own truths of what it means to be black and gay. Margot Bordelon will direct.

Roundabout Underground will stage its first musical in more than a decade in winter 2020 with Zaitchik’s Darling Grenadine, about a charismatic songwriter and clever chorus girl whose romantic fantasy begins to dissolve as reality creeps in. Tony nominee Michael Berresse has signed on to direct and choreograph. The musical premiered to strong critical notices at Goodspeed Musicals in 2017. Darling Grenadine is slated for a summer run at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, Illinois, ahead of its New York arrival next year.
