The musical adaptation of Carrie, which received a notoriously short run on Broadway before achieving cult fame, will play a large part in a musical episode of Riverdale.

The April 18 episode of CW's gritty take on Archie will feature 11 numbers from the Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford score as the students of Riverdale High put on the show.

According to a prop cast list, Cheryl Blossom (played on screen by Madelaine Petsch) will take on the title role. Also taking center stage are Archie (K.J. Apa) as Tommy Ross, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) as Chris Hargensen, and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) as Sue Snell, and Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick) as Margaret White.

Admittedly, all fit their respective roles almost too well: the misfit with an affinity for rage-induced chaos, the jock with a lyrical passion, the privileged queen bee, the perpetual do-gooder, the overbearing mother. Kevin (Casey Cott, brother to Broadway's Corey Cott) will direct his fellow Riverdale citizens.

The musical adaptation of Stephen King's novel premiered in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1988. The Broadway bow, which featured Tony winner Betty Buckley as Carrie's mother Margaret, closed after just 16 previous and just five regular performances.

Despite failing critically and financially (it was considered the most expensive Broadway flop at the time), buzz for Carrie lived on as the musical attracted a cult-like following. A revised edition, featuring several new songs and a reworked book by Lawrence D. Cohen, premiered at Off-Broadway's MCC Theater in 2012. The cast included Molly Ranson, Tony nominee Marin Mazzie, and Anastasia's Christy Altomare and Derek Klena.

Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has both Broadway and Carrie ties, having penned the books to Broadway’s American Psycho and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and the screenplay for the 2013 remake of Carrie.
