Opera star Renée Fleming is taking the reins of Aspen Music Festival’s opera summer school, re-imagining the program for today’s increasingly competitive landscape.

The soprano, along with Houston Grand Opera Artistic Director Patrick Summers, will lead the charge developing the eight-week course for up-and-coming performers, according to The New York Times.

Both were designated artistic directors of the renamed Aspen Opera Theater and VocalArts. Over 50 opera singers will come to the Rocky Mountains to study under the pair, 14 of which will be named Renée Fleming Artists and given a full scholarship.

Fleming continues to perform in various engagements, including as Margaret Johnson in The Light in the Piazza at LA Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago (where she serves as a creative consultant) following a London bow. She recently concluded a summer tour of the world debut of Penelope, including a Colorado premiere with Aspen Music Festival and School opposite Tony winner and fellow Margaret Johnson Victoria Clark. The soprano is also an artistic advisor for John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
