The Verdict Read London Reviews for Audra McDonald in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill McDonald makes her official West End debut, reprising her Tony-winning performance as Billie Holiday in the play with music that opened June 27.

The acclaimed Broadway production of Lanie Robertson’s Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, starring Audra McDonald as troubled jazz and blues singer Billie Holiday, officially opened in London’s West End June 27 at the Wyndham’s Theatre.

Lady Day marks McDonald’s official West End debut. She made Broadway history with her performance as Holiday, earning her sixth Tony Award, and becoming the first woman to win Tonys in all four eligible acting categories. She holds the record for the most Tony Award wins of any actor in competitive Tony categories.

Directed by Lonny Price, who also helmed the Broadway run, Lady Day is currently scheduled to run through September 9.

Audra McDonald Returns to the Stage as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill

Lady Day, which offers a glimpse of one of the final performances from the legendary jazz and blues singer before her death in 1959, includes such songs as “When a Woman Loves a Man,” “What a Little Moonlight Can Do,” “God Bless the Child,” and “T’ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do.”
