Playwright and lyricist Myrna Lamb died September 15 at age 87 in her home in New Jersey, the New York Times reports.
Lamb’s 1970 musical Mod Donna, co-written with Susan Hulsman and staged at the Public Theater—then the New York Shakespeare Festival—was considered a groundbreaking second-wave feminist work for its depiction of women’s sexual liberation.
Public founder Joseph Papp was a strong supporter of Lamb. Papp, who produced Mod Donna, giving Lamb her break in commercial theatre, went on to direct her next musical, Apple Pie (1976), at the Public.
Her other works include Ballad of Brooklyn, which was staged at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1979; Crab Quadrille, staged by the Interart Theater in 1976; as well as numerous screenplays.
According to the Times, Lamb wrote frequently for Anselma Dell’Olio’s New Feminist Theater.
