La Jolla Playhouse has announced principal casting for its world premiere of Escape to Margaritaville. Paul Alexander Nolan, who last appeared on Broadway in Bright Star, will star in the New York-aimed musical, which will feature new songs and well-known hits by Jimmy Buffett. Nolan will be joined by fellow Broadway alums Alison Luff and Lisa Howard.
Performances will begin May 9 at the California venue, where the musical is scheduled to run through June 25. The show will then play New Orleans' Saenger Theatre, Houston's Hobby Center, and the Oriental Theatre in Chicago prior to a Broadway bow, scheduled for spring 2018. Christopher Ashley and Kelly Devine will direct and choreograph, respectively.
In addition to Bright Star, Nolan's stage credits include Doctor Zhivago, Once, and Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway and Bay Street Theatre's recent production of My Fair Lady. Luff was last seen on the Broadway stage in Les Miserables; her additional credits include Matilda, Scandalous, and Ghost. Howard earned a Drama Desk Award nomination for It Shoulda Been You; she also appeared on Broadway in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, 9 to 5, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
Featuring a book by Greg Garcia and Mike O'Malley, Escape to Margaritaville follows Tully (Nolan), a part-time bartender and singer at the titular island paradise, where a beautiful career-minded tourist in town makes him question his overly relaxed lifestyle. Luff and Howard take on the roles of Rachel and Tammy, respectively.
