Hudson County Community College Department of Cultural Affairs currently presents the exhibition Out on Broadway: A Visual Legacy, celebrating the LGBT experience in theatre, through March 2 at the the college’s Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull Gallery at 71 Sip Avenue (6th floor) in Jersey City.
Curated by designer James E. Crochet, the exhibit features characters and costumes from a host of Broadway shows.
Among the items on display are costumes, sketches, and accessories from costume designers Gregg Barnes, Jess Goldstein, William Ivey Long, Bob Mackie, David Murin, Arianne Phillips, and David Zinn to iconic LGBT characters in shows like Cabaret, The Boy From Oz, Follies, Grey Gardens, Hairspray, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Kinky Boots, La Cage aux Follies, Mame, The Producers, Rent, and Side Show.
Crochet has designed more than 50 productions. The Hudson County resident and the owner of Leading Lady Costumes has previously curated exhibitions including All That Glitters: Embroidering Character in Costume and Extreme Silhouette and Costuming the Great White Way.
The Benjamin J. Dineen, III and Dennis C. Hull Gallery is open Monday–Friday from 11 AM to 5 PM (Tuesday from 11 to 8 PM). The Gallery is closed Sundays and holidays.
