Eric Owens has been named artistic advisor of Glimmerglass Festival. In the position, the bass-baritone will consult closely with Artistic and General Director Francesca Zambello and Music Director Joseph Colneri on repertoire and casting matters at the Cooperstown, New York opera company.
As previously reported, Owens is also set to headline the Metropolitan Opera’s upcoming staging of the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher. His numerous previous credits with the Met include this past season’s Rusalka and L’Amour du Loin, as well as the 2010 premiere of the company’s new Ring Cycle production.
On the Glimmerglass stage, Owens has appeared in The Rape of Lucretia, Lost in the Stars, Aida, and Macbeth. He also served as the company’s artist in residence in 2012 and 2015.
“I believe passionately in artists continuing their craft while giving back to the industry,” Owens said in a statement. “I’m particularly looking forward to working with Francesca at Glimmerglass where they work very hard to nurture their artists and to use their art to stir conversations in the community and beyond.”
The 2017 lineup kicks off July 7 with Porgy and Bess; additional titles include Oklahoma!, Xerxes, The Siege of Calais, Scalia/Ginsburg, and an afternoon of stories and performances with Oscar-winning and Tony-nominated composer Stephen Schwartz. For more information, visit Glimmerglass.org.
