New York City’s Symphony Space is joining the centenary celebration of composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein in 2018 with an eight-hour marathon of music, dance, film, and conversation exploring the many facets of the maestro’s career, starting May 19 at 3 PM.

Bernstein (1918–1990) was equally lionized in the words of classical theatre and Broadway. A longtime conductor of the New York Philharmonic, he also took time to compose scores for West Side Story, On the Town, Wonderful Town, Candide, and other shows.

Titled Wall to Wall, the program will include the following events. Exact timing is to be announced:

* Bernstein and Broadway, songs from Bernstein’s Broadway musicals, performed by stage stars, to be announced.

* A semi-staged production of Bernstein’s one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti, with Broadway stars Alexandra Silber and Shuler Hensley, directed by the composer's daughter, Jamie Bernstein.

* A survey of Bernstein's chamber music, including Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs, Halil, Three Meditations from ‘Mass’, Clarinet Sonata, ‘West Side StoryDances, and Anniversaries.

* Selections from Bernstein's vocal and choral music, including The Lark.

* Bernstein and Dance with Keigwin + Company dancers performing Episodes (featuring orchestral music from the musical On the Town) and Waterfront (set to excerpts to Bernstein's orchestral soundtrack for Elia Kazan's film On the Waterfront).

* Conversations with members of the Bernstein family and cultural figures TBA, in addition to historical TV clips featuring Bernstein.

Hensley starred on Broadway in Tarzan (“Kerchak”), Oklahoma! (“Judd Fry”). and Young Frankenstein (“The Monster”). Silber played Tzeitel in the most recent revival of Fiddler in the Roof.

Admission to the marathon will be free, though premium seating will be reserved for those two donate $100 or more. Symphony Space is located at 2537 Broadway in Manhattan.
