A new version of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical begins performances March 23 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Adapted from the book of the same name by Rick Riordan, the new musical is written by Joe Tracz (Series of Unfortunate Events) and Rob Rokicki (Strange Tails), with direction by Stephen Brackett.

In the title role is Chris McCarrell (Les Miserables, Peter Pan Live, The OA), who stars alongside a cast made up of Carrie Compere, James Hayden Rodriguez, Sarah Beth Pfeifer, Jonathan Raviv, George Salazar, and Kristin Stokes.

An earlier version of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical debuted in New York in 2014 as part of Theatreworks USA’s free theatre series before heading on tour. The Off-Broadway show now features an updated score, expanded script, a larger cast, and a live band.

The Lightning Thief will officially April 4 for a limited engagement scheduled to run through May 6.

Here’s how production notes bill the story: “Percy Jackson has newly discovered powers he can’t control, monsters on his trail, and he is on a quest to find Zeus’s lightning bolt and prevent a war between the Greek gods. Normal is a myth when you’re a demigod.“

The production also features lighting design by David Lander, set design by Lee Savage, costume design by Sydney Maresca, and sound design by Ryan Rumery.

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is being presented by Theatreworks NYC in arrangement with Rick Riordan and the Gallt & Zacker Literary Agency.
