Signature Theatre has enlisted Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and The Great Comet Tony nominee Dave Malloy as writers-in-residence for its upcoming 2018–2019 season.

Nottage (Ruined, Sweat) joins the Off-Broadway company for the 2018–2019 Residence 1 initiative, which produces three plays by one writer over the course of one year. The lineup will include two of her comedies: Fabulation, or The Re-Education of Undine (directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz, November 20–December 30) and By the Way, Meet Vera Stark (directed by Kamilah Forbes, January 29–March 10, 2019); a new play by Nottage will premiere in the 2019–2020 season.

Malloy becomes the first musical theatre writer-in-residence with the company as part of the Residency 5 program. The new season will include the world premiere of Octet, directed by Annie Tippe. Performances will run April 30–June 9. The piece, featuring a score for an a cappella chamber choir, explores addiction and nihilism through the lens of modern technology (including internet comment boards).

The residence program provides writers with resources for five years, guaranteeing at least three productions at the Pershing Square Signature Center. Malloy joins the current roster of Residency 5 writers: Annie Baker, Martha Clarke, Katori Hall, Quiara Alegría Hudes, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, and Dominique Morisseau.

The season will also include Will Eno’s Thom Pain (based on nothing) directed by Oliver Butler (October 23–December 2), Athol Fugard’s Boesman and Lena (February 5–March 17), and a Terry Kinney-helmed revival of the late Sam Shepard’s Curse of the Starving Class (April 23–June 2).
