December 17: Sydney Theatre Company’s production of The Present arrives on Broadway starring Oscar winner Cate Blanchett
and Richard Roxburgh, alongside a stellar Australian cast. The production is Andrew Upton’s new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s first play, Platonov.

December 8: The world premiere of The Band’s Visit, based on the award-winning film of the same name, opens at Atlantic Theater Company. The new musical features a book by Drama Desk Award nominee Itamar Moses and music and lyrics by Tony Award nominee David Yazbek, and a cast that includes John Cariani and Monk star Tony Shalhoub.

December 11: Broadway’s first a cappella musical, In Transit, opens at Circle in the Square. Inspired by the vibrant rhythms of life on the subway, and featuring a score from the talents behind Frozen and Pitch Perfect, the show follows the intertwining lives of 11 New Yorkers.

December 12: Two Hollywood heavyweights take on Othello downtown. Tony winner Sam Gold returns to New York Theatre Workshop to direct David Oyelowo in the title role and Daniel Craig as famed foe Iago in William Shakespeare’s drama.

December 16: The Los Angeles tryout of the Broadway-aimed musical Amélie officially opens at the Ahmanson Theatre for an engagement scheduled to run through January 15, 2017. Phillipa Soo, who earned a Tony nomination as Best Actress in a Musical for her Broadway debut as Eliza Schuyler in Hamilton, stars in the title role.

December 11: Mary-Louise Parker and Denis Arndt wrap up performances of Heisenberg. Simon Stephens’ two-hander, directed by Mark Brokaw, transferred to Broadway following an acclaimed run Off-Broadway last season.

December 18: Anna Deavere Smith’s Notes from the Field concludes its Off-Broadway debut at Second Stage Theatre. The solo show has been a hit with New York City critics and audiences alike; in the new monologue play, acclaimed playwright, actor, and educator Smith turns her attention to the school-to-prison pipeline and the poverty gap.

SPECIAL EVENTS

December 9: La La Land, the new film that pays tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood musicals, is released in select theatres in New York and L.A. ahead of a nationwide release December 16. The movie musical stars Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, John Legend, and J. K. Simmons. The film has a score of songs co-written by Justin Hurwitz and the Tony-nominated team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen).

December 11: Disney's animated blockbuster Frozen makes its network TV premiere on ABC-TV’s Wonderful World of Disney at 8 PM ET, followed by the documentary The Making of “Frozen”: A Return to Arendelle at 10:04 PM ET.

December 12: Tony nominee Carmen Cusack and other members of the original cast of the Broadway musical Bright Star come together for a reunion concert at Town Hall in New York. The evening is hosted by co-creators Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, who are also performing.

December 12: Roundabout Theatre Company presents a star-studded, one-night-only benefit concert of Kiss Me, Kate. The musical comedy is revived with a cast that includes Norm Lewis, Kelli O’Hara, Will Chase, Robert Fairchild, Heléne Yorke, Chuck Cooper, Richard Kind, and John Pankow.

December 13: George Takei’s Allegiance: The Broadway Musical On The Big Screen, a filmed version of the 2015 Broadway musical, is shown in cinemas across the U.S. for one night only.

December 16: The anticipated film version of August Wilson's Tony- and Pulitzer-winning drama Fences, starring Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, and several other cast members of the acclaimed 2010 Broadway revival, kicks off its limited release in selected theatres. The movie adaptation will have its wide release across the U.S. on Christmas Day.
