New Light Theater Project will present five New York premieres as part of its 2018–2019 season, each of which will explore the common theme of "A History, Rewritten". Included in the season will be Ray Yamanouchi's The American Tradition, the winner of the 2018–2019 New Light New Voices Award.

Set in Antebellum America with an absurd and Brechtian twist, The American Tradition follows Eleanor—cross-dressing as a white planter—and her husband, Bill—pretending to be her loyal servant— as they attempt to escape to the free state of Pennsylvania.

Performances of The American Tradition will run January 25–February 16, 2019, at 13th Street Repertory Company. Axel Avin, Jr. will direct.

Playwright Yamanouchi is a member of Ars Nova's Play Group and host and founder of Re:Theatre, which features interviews with the theatre community.

NLTP's season will also feature Owen Panettieri's Meaningful Conversation in a co-production with Luis A. Miranda, Jr. (directed by Anais Koivisto, performances will run September 8–22 at A.R.T./New York Theatres); Michelle Kholos Brooks' Hitler's Tasters, directed by NLTP Founding Artistic Director Sarah Norris (October 5–27 at IRT Theater); Deb Margolin's Imagining Madoff, directed by Jerry Heymann at a theatre to be announced next spring; and Amina Henry's The Great Novel, directed by Norris at The Flea Theater next June as part of the Flea's anchor program.
